Back in the AutoCAD
days typically a CAD Manager would manage all the AutoCAD templates &
blocks. Everything was available to all the design staff to use but they were
not freely allowed to edit templates or blocks. This became a "check & balance" that made sense because it's
much easier to manage a standard if there is not a "free for all" on
it. If there was a "free for all" then drawing sets would not be
consistent and things would run less efficient. This is why a CAD Manager
typically has had things like templates and blocks locked down thus the term
"CAD Nazi" became widely known.</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
With the switch from
AutoCAD to Revit I have noticed that standards can get very messy very quick in
Revit. There are several ways this happens. A few ways I have seen this happen
is copying from other projects, transferring project standards or the model was
never setup properly to begin with so designers just made things up on their
own. For example often times a designer doesn't even know that they copied in
several viewport types, text types and line types from a few different projects
when they copied a few details. </div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
Let's take a step
back and make sure we are clear on the different types of standard items in a
Revit model that can impact consistency between several disciplines:</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<b>System Families -</b>
Callout Types, Dimension Styles, Text Styles, Elevation Types, Grid Types,
Level Types, Section Types, Viewport Types (View Titles)</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<b>Component Families
(Symbol & Tag)</b> - Title Block, Callout Head, Section Head, Section Tail,
Level Heads, Grid Heads, North Arrow, Graphic Scale, View Title, Revision Tag,
View Reference, Room Tag, Space Tag, Keynote Tag</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
*Discipline Specific
Tags (Door, Window, Duct, Beam, Panel, etc.)</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<b>Project Settings</b> -
Line Weights, Object Styles, Project Units, Phase Settings</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
Most people might
not know that most of these items can be made editable in the Worksets Manager.
For example if the Callout Types were made editable by someone with the
username "BIM Manager" when a designer goes to try to edit a callout
type it will give a permissions message saying "You do not have
permissions to edit this element BIM Manager has ownership of the Callout Types
and will need to relinquish". Below I will go through how I have been
using the Username and Worksets so users cannot edit these standard elements.
This forces them to ask the BIM Manager to update a title block, symbol or
project setting rather than working in a silo or going their own way. </div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Step One:</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
Change your
username. Go to the Big R and Options. Change your username. I have been using
something obvious so they know they need to contact me before editing the item.
BIM Manager, BIM Coordinator,….BIM Nazi if you like to live dangerously. <span style="font-weight: bold;">DO NOT FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR USERNAME BACK AFTER
SYNCING AND CLOSING THE MODEL!</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Step Two:</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
Open up each model
and go to worksets. I select the following and make these editable:</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>

<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Step Three:</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
After I make the
worksets above editable I also go into the model and "borrow" the
levels and project basepoint. If a level gets moved or deleted it can cause
major problems. Same with the base point.</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Syncing and Closing Model:</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
When you sync the
model uncheck all the boxes circled in the image below. This will sync but it
will not relinquish all these elements you took ownership. When you close the
model be sure to "Keep Ownership of Elements". If you relinquish you will have to open the
model and check everything out again. After repeating this 10-20 times you will
get these memorized and it will only take about 2-3 minutes to go through this
process in each model. This could save valuable time fixing problems after they
happen.</div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">DO NOT FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR USERNAME BACK AFTER

I came across this video since I have been trying to find a good way to compare updated models as we recieve them from Arch/Struct. I'm sure there are several add-ins to do this but it is free (if you have software licences already). Also, good communication is always a good idea too rather than making assumptions.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
If you follow the steps in the video below and click on the selection set in Navisworks (Simulate or Manage) you can right click on the selected elements in the Selection Tree then "Hide Unselected" to isolate the elements that are unmatched. This way you can only see the elements that have changed in the new model.</div>

Saw this in the March 2014 issue of AUGIWorld (<a href="http://www.augi.com/augiworld/">http://www.augi.com/augiworld/</a>). I changed my settings so no more opening families when I double click! Lots of other great Revit Tricks in this issue!<br />

The model was set up with three phases (Existing, Demo and New Construction). An issue came up with how Rooms/Spaces associate with phasing. I will describe the problem and the solution I found to resolve this issue. There might be a better solution for this but this was the best I could find at the moment. For reference Revit 2014 was used.<br />
<b></b> <b></b><br />
<b></b><br />
<b>The Problem:</b> <br />
<br />
Each individual element in the model is assigned to a phase. This includes things like walls, doors, windows, ducts, pipes, equipment and rooms/spaces. On remodel projects you could have several phases depending on the scope. To keep it simple say there are three phases (Existing, Demo and New Construction). A problem arises when you try to get two separate room boundaries to show up on the Demo Plan. For example, say you have two rooms and demolish a wall between them to make a larger room. The rooms could be bound to the wall that is being demolished but this will only show on the existing phase view. I could not find a way to get the two separate rooms to show when the view phase was set to Demo. Since I need to show a Demo plan and New Construction plan this didn’t work. See example below. <br />

<b></b><br />
<br />
<b>The Solution:</b> <i></i><br />
<i></i><br />
<i>Demo Plans-</i> The best way I found to get around this issue was to create a Room/Space Symbol Annotation Family. This symbol would be placed on a floor plan view in the Architectural model. The other disciplines would go to the visibility graphics of the demo view and set the Architectural link to ‘by linked view’ referencing the floor plan they set up with the symbols placed in each room. <i></i><br />
<i></i><br />
<i>New Construction Plans-</i> There really isn’t a work around needed for this. Just make sure all the rooms/spaces in the model are on the New Construction phase and tag them like normal. <b></b> <b></b><br />
<b></b><br />
<br />
<b>Conclusio</b><b>n:</b> <br />
<br />
I tried changing the phase filters several different ways and could not get the existing rooms to show in the demo plan. Unfortunately this workaround is a bit tedious since you will have to add the room symbols on the demo plans in addition to the rooms/space on the new construction plans. Creating a view with the room symbols in the Architecture model that the other disciplines can reference will save some time. <br />

Sometimes these are missing from families that a provided by manufacturers or even out of the box with Revit. <p>1. Open the family and go to the Ref. Level plan view <p>2. Plan out where the maintenance clearance needs to be. For this family it will be on the right side where the pipe connections are. <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-VhLvNCilL9M/UoI6ohTWGMI/AAAAAAAAAnI/zXaB5rC3iuM/s1600-h/clip_image002%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="clip_image002" border="0" alt="clip_image002" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeACIuYn0QqRQ0BipG2L9H0x20gP6mNInSDGnNP5dV0jBaBs-epe65zoko_NF1-sD4XHyKXepA3tsc-xx8wk0LjI60lA9FOdCjC1ng-9IiSLt4NCI2atjmVeKYarg3X7jTWI9T05eFxlI/?imgmax=800" width="382" height="246"></a> <p>3. Create the extrusion as a rectangle in this area. Don’t worry about the size just make it to the right of the pipe connections. <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-MHmQd4C6LzQ/UoI6pV1_YlI/AAAAAAAAAkk/3TZVwKB5erc/s1600-h/clip_image003%25255B4%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="clip_image003" border="0" alt="clip_image003" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRZYfOlDIq-KphyphenhyphenGfQkQLgpCJc0W5Y1DFRSu1mKJMll3n5hv4NNmcOBIixt1XRxDEaxZyjb9Ng2rQQcU1q3_t2TUcIKBtv4kGU_yoZkPSZRNHsd3QYBWeBuQcVsRzstPlj8T9xPEIjMOU/?imgmax=800" width="376" height="295"></a> <p>4. Align the extrusion to the reference planes on three sides. Lock these to the reference planes by clicking on the ‘pad lock’ that appears after you align each side. See arrows below for the three sizes to align. <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNJxK26dUY9FyuGWvPkmj1CntBp1Aqiwqau57rGQcCGT5iKrF6p2BayydBIzY1dfxKZnjNSPjL7JtvhxqsuBstxo2wYn6ZzxPfRgvxFQYwm9XHAz5qKsYbk2nKQLlBrB_V9RQyXZxoMC8/s1600-h/clip_image004%25255B4%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="clip_image004" border="0" alt="clip_image004" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-TitRuW8oQZI/UoI6q7gh9MI/AAAAAAAAAlA/MAwiBwwkHzw/clip_image004_thumb%25255B1%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="379" height="302"></a> <p>5. Create an ‘aligned dimension’ from the left side reference plane (that the extrusion is aligned to) to the right side of the extrusion. Make this extrusion the desired width and click on the dimension and lock it. See image below. <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_D2DlJEP1u3zwYiIngShF9pLRGM_bE8nWGO7JoQMrYmDY2RXCdwuVBIeuWberQbD8Z9XuOCrkvM53J2F31w_rg7Gb6L4csgn2io0zt2ThCK72GzdtmJJevNThKcvzZVe35oB7pdjqMz8/s1600-h/clip_image005%25255B4%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="clip_image005" border="0" alt="clip_image005" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjqoH3LszNfzVQQxN20olLnq02dDvR31qbIs7rZ7wPv6wPdirv97_wNfJfmQtZBPJB6-1i95j3zEOuZzDejaFCEuAlMLInTtKhlZpDqMfDNwiT4aomtQHDw_YJlrzUWK_gCmhH8BfL6WU/?imgmax=800" width="389" height="312"></a> <p>6. Open the front elevation view and align the extrusion to the reference plane at the reference level and the reference plane at the top of the box. Be sure to lock these like step 4 above. See image below. <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-PJzYyBkp_uQ/UoI6sG5uGDI/AAAAAAAAAlY/mWoaMrGPy0w/s1600-h/clip_image006%25255B4%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="clip_image006" border="0" alt="clip_image006" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMuT0nt6APRiR80y2idHG5y62ngJnVahp80csmxIPX9FfMDvxg6tT_1FZ86orGSnOvPlZasQ5CcYQLHWWwnVewVA0EulqkVXOzJNDiiHDftqBW5vqNLXdlt0JXYPXA1LbqXDMAN6R9Qyo/?imgmax=800" width="397" height="313"></a> <p>7. Test that the extrusion flexes properly when you change to difference types <p>8. Open the 3D View and change the Visual Style to realistic. All extrusions will show shaded grey. <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoPAyVerq4mSA9HLDjTa14qDUN9H-leWC5bT-qG4l_AncbSigk_qM4ozktN9xS_03uUG68TXqgEypi7kMafa3_TavfQhl6xFqFMTBAFphWit8WfVY81WU1qjhhizG8iDP4KkrXurZRqII/s1600-h/clip_image007%25255B4%25255D.png"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="clip_image007" border="0" alt="clip_image007" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1SNzPBYba4zy5yvD8kDZs1EUolnPEVpCX2qK6oSMgfFpD610UglOJrTvE170LSXPFpDpyuW_SMcsZB5A69552HLnSxRNfZS-VsrCNoOVTlqm0DV1s2bY5__aLpR2CCAQ1WA2Gq902P0s/?imgmax=800" width="303" height="232"></a> <p>9. Depending on how you wish to see the maintenance clearance you can set the visibility in the Visibility Settings for the extrusion. For example if you don’t want to see this on your plans that are set to medium detail only check the extrusion to appear in fine detail. That way you see it in working views only which should be set to fine detail. <p>NOTE: A solid extrusion is required rather than a void if you are exporting to Navisworks. A void will not work with collision detection. I have setup in my template over the past few years. Some items are general and
I don’t go into much detail since they can be different for each company or
project. Keep in mind a template is a good place to keep one file up to date
with everything you have learned along the way. The idea is to make things
consistent, productive and easy to find on future projects. Often I’ll be
working on a project or get a call on a project and notice something that needs
to be fixed, tweaked or added. I always keep a list of things that I need to
remember to update. Also, remember that the “Transfer Project Standards”
feature in Revit can be very useful with previous projects.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

MEP needs into one file or separate them by discipline. It can be easier to

<br />I recently added a numbering scheme to the details so they
are easier to sort through when a user goes to insert from file. I added the
sheet number/detail number to the begining of the detail name in the View Name
property. Then I copied the detail name to Title on Sheet so this will not
display on the view title when inserted.<br />

</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">On projects and in my templates I have the different categories
where views are organized. In this write-up I will explain how I use the
project browser to organize views into three main categories. These categories
are Working Views, Sheet Views and BIM Coordination Views. Also, this mostly
applies to MEP but could apply to other trades as well. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">Working Views are to be used for modeling. These typically have
all elements and links turned on for coordination. They are set to wireframe so
they refresh faster. These are usually floorplans, ceiling plans, sections and
3D views. It is important to tell people to model and adjust the model in these
views. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">Sheet Views are to be used for sheets. These typically have
other trades turned off or halftoned so they don’t display on the sheets (there
are exceptions to this). They are typically set to hidden line for graphical
reasons on the plans. These are typically floorplans, sections and 3D
isometrics. We typically do not put ceiling plans on sheets since they are only
used for coordination. Also, drafting views go under the sheet views and these
contain details, diagrams, etc. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">BIM Coordination Views are typically used on larger projects but
can also be used on smaller ones. Some views I use are set up for exporting 3D

<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">· Use view templates to apply these properties to other views
rather than selecting each individual view and changing them. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">· You can use more than three main categories for the View Type.
I have found these three work for my needs (Working Views, Sheet Views and BIM
Coordination Views. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">· Be sure to stress the importance of the difference between a
working view and a sheet view to your staff. If you are using 2013 it’s a
little better because they will not be able to change to sheet view properties
if a view template is assigned to the sheet views. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #cccccc; font-family: inherit;">
</span><br />
<span style="color: #bbbbbb; font-family: "Trebuchet MS","sans-serif";"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">· If there are several people working on the project it’s a good
idea to have separate working views. I usually do this under the Sub-Discipline
property. For example I would make a section called “Johns Working Views”. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span><br />

Using Filters for the different Duct and Pipe systems can improve the way you view and manage the system information in the model. A basic understanding of Revit Systems, View Templates and Filters will be needed for this exercise. Below we will be filtering the System Abbreviation property of duct and pipe systems. Why System Abbreviation? I decided to use that since it’s a property that is different for each individual system type. Filtering by System Classification or System Type can get confused when systems contain the same word especially when you get into piping (ex. Hot Water & Hot Water Return). System Name can be different but often people are not using systems for what they are intended to be so they forget to name them properly (I guess this could force them to do it but with most things in Revit there are several ways for everything).<br />
<br />
Revit Systems Basics – Mechanical Equipment and Plumbing Fixture family types have connectors in them to connect ducts and pipes to. These individual connectors have properties for different system types (Supply Air, Return Air, Exhaust Air, Domestic Cold Water, Domestic Hot Water, Hydronic Supply, Hydronic Return, etc). When a duct or pipe is connected to a connector on a family it will automatically be put on that system type. There can be multiple different system types associated with one connector (ex. Hydronic Supply could be Heating or Cooling, Supply Air could be used for Outside Air). There is a limited number of System Types that can be assigned to a connector so we create multiple Duct and Pipe Systems (See step 1 below) for the systems we need. Currently there are no system types in Revit for things like gas or compressed air so I use the ‘Other’ system type. For a list of system types see help menus or consult with Google.<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: small;">Duct System Filters:</span></strong><br />
<strong></strong><br />
We begin by adding a System Abbreviation to each Duct System Type. We will then create filters for each Duct System Type.<br />
1) Go to the project browser and expand Families – Duct Systems – Duct System. Out of the box there should be three options (Exhaust Air, Return Air and Supply Air)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy8LI0qZihaRhTU5R77SoutYJe5liY-f2wL3d8oCTMbwCQp1LEGHLPLsVEztcqq3QeijoegIEy3sjuoBQ-b22e0XRc2n-gM65WpDPy3g6oqgZqFodKm5RFEcWRbEUHL4JtwgNZcqVLaaU/s1600-h/image5.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="95" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-SmwN3m7jpCc/UDacn8jmJQI/AAAAAAAAAao/SqnfihW23S0/image_thumb1.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="144" /></a><br />
<br />
2) Double Click on Exhaust Air to get to the Type Properties. Enter in an abbreviation for Exhaust Air (I use EA). Do the same for Return Air and Supply Air (I use RA and SA).<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2bIFLqE5eaGHtxdkINh9bc7rM6BBlYjPkw7Q4YA43TPzzkNSwV0J_wCXxPEdjLA2c4uhR1bIe1JkEoj4G_PtEHckgw6MndK-mb3c2pCOIiFAcinge_xfAwHpOCzI-sgU6QxSPIAD_AOQ/s1600-h/image11.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvUl8RK6yCxSuUrOvutQ586Au8zZcQoiN1SbptBCqjjUmpolR63HWx2qjmRtiAzTBjH7S2TnwocxGh-MZmhkPJ7F78ojlX8sHYtf3nDT5ftGa7YDJUpDOIzdLvLaFqXr034jRzmoumSag/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="184" /></a><br />
<br />
3) Open the Filters Settings and you will see the default Filters for Duct and Pipes.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-QJIDFPukIvk/UDacqbmIWgI/AAAAAAAAAbA/DTeAWT6shsY/s1600-h/image%25255B2%25255D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="146" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-iPOl3Ng5Mgk/UDacs9Qb1WI/AAAAAAAAAbI/tIzDI-c3JIk/image_thumb.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="244" /></a><br />
<br />
4) Click on the ‘Mechanical – Supply’ filter and then check ‘Hide un-checked categories’. The following categories should display. If they do not then uncheck ‘Hide un-checked categories’ and check them (Air Terminals and Flex Ducts might not be checked). Also, note that I did not check mechanical equipment because it can be associated with multiple system types. Repeat this step for the other two Duct System Types (Exhaust Air and Return Air)<br />
<br />
*Do not check Duct Systems. It will limit the options in the next step under Filter Rules<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDG_RpnDwIwpYJJH8pVJCq7-f9ZQ5AvCtdF_sq9Rlf5c2K0uqwyzaqMKlIEgd0rzxKBnbipjJE6_XootMZSrGMv9KeIFkwDRK0HHxGryRoMkzBYownizLJF3vdGDNt-tEj0SLs33ICdlU/s1600-h/image%25255B5%25255D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilc0WLpAAjbCVmFksSvj5s1X7dIBTnMZ4N5rIhMfIqABepuQKa-ebJ6SZ5rEazh1JNjGyKCHdQ78MBuR2dkzd0HVkY2wzjjGraWUEHaABGscDJvjG_JkZdq2kTnWbOLkWKPkTdPvCgUgc/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="178" /></a><br />
<br />
5) Under the Filter Rules change the Filter by to System Abbreviation Equals SA. Repeat this for Return Air and Exhaust Air. If you checked Duct Systems this in the previous step the option for System Abbreviation will not be available.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhL-xS5c8Lgs4kJ2dsgy5kV74WpuUoz6oGYn5CgtP_7_5t3JvUbZdvT4kGfMfz_cqgwUCYGR4WE8xWj1JEoT4BLfwdzEqRmY1wP_IZdhLl1vNjY_RKVRZF5eo5Ii8sVcxNCnH4wyM80Jg/s1600-h/image%25255B8%25255D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="121" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-r3cSYyFXj-w/UDacw9A5uAI/AAAAAAAAAbo/EE2IZZGUQk4/image_thumb%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="244" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: small;">Pipe System Filters:</span></strong><br />
We begin by adding a System Abbreviation to each Pipe System Type. We will then create filters for each Pipe System Type. Piping can be a bit more to manage than Duct since there are many different system types.<br />
<em>Pipe System Type Breakdown (Plumbing & Hydronics) -</em> <br />
Hydronic Supply – Used for Chilled Water Supply, Heating Water Supply. Calculates GPM.<br />
Hydronic Return - Used for Chilled Water Return, Heating Water Return. Calculates GPM.<br />
Sanitary – Used for Waste/Sanitary and Vent. Calculates Fixture Units<br />
Vent – Not Used. Does NOT calculate Fixture Units<br />
Domestic Hot Water – Used for Hot Water and Hot Water Return. Calculates Fixture Units and converts to GPM<br />
Domestic Cold Water - Used for Cold Water. Calculates Fixture Units and converts to GPM<br />
Other – Used for other systems that Revit does not calculate. Compressed Air, Gas, etc.<br />
<br />
<br />
1) Go to the project browser and expand Families – Piping Systems – Piping System. Out of the box there should be several options. Based off the breakdown above create the following systems. <br />
Note: that you might need to add additional systems as needed depending on the type of projects you work on.<br />
<br />
Note: I do NOT use the out of the box vent system. I duplicated Sanitary and named it Vent.<br />
<br />

<br />
2) Double Click on Chilled Water Return to get to the Type Properties. Enter in an abbreviation for Chilled Water Return (I use CHWR). Do the same for the rest of the Piping System Types (I did not do Fire Protection in this exercise)<br />
<br />

<br />
4) Click on the ‘Mechanical – Supply’ filter and then check ‘Hide un-checked categories’. The following categories should display. If they do not then uncheck ‘Hide un-checked categories’ and check them (Flex Pipes might not be checked). Also, note that I did not check plumbing fixtures because it can be associated with multiple system types. Repeat this step for the other Piping System Types.<br />
<br />
*Do not check Pipe Systems. It will limit the options in the next step under Filter Rules<br />

<br />
<br />
<strong>Applying Filters to Views:</strong><br />
Now that you have created the filters you can add them to a view template and apply them to views. Depending on which version you use (2013 has some view template improvements that automate things a little more than previous versions). I am going to show how to add the filters to a plan view under visibility graphics which is the same procedure as applying it to a view template.<br />
<br />
<br />
1) Open a plan view and go to Visibility Graphics – Filters tab. Currently there are no filters applied to the view. Click on Add to add the filters you created.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp3-OyVzp2FDdOOAHDs77SobG1-mcSeKyXnXN2-YpXmI-PpPkwcrwv4eGkeEbvK_-wPDKuGb88x787w5nhADrJC9RNOBTaDf_-OvvwnorjU_dDbbDftblpfBb9RuHzg4rOQf85HxUeo1g/s1600-h/image%25255B38%25255D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDQ4vZ3nf1fieZfKbc-fz5K-4CxDN0q3Ozrm7PgkaZ5cIB0tHmQFqW8cd3jGgpCgtuh04fCsn1RGTFn1iwc6EGwwe_9yLoldvH_2SV4bYxAzLCB85pIuUbrFMStfTrmUThcm-nF-89SWY/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="244" /></a><br />
<br />
2) Select all the filters you want to add. I typically put the Duct filters on top and Pipe Filters on Bottom. Select the three Duct Filters and click OK. Then open the Add filters again and select the Pipe Filters to add. You can also change the order after you add them by selecting the filter and clicking on Up/Down.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNORjI32sQmWTEfCDaVfvVjsFlFa31jQRgaV2rifXojW4T-ge1PxoZyW-O5WeLuoDmm-Z7pAzy082ECj0nW7p0SZE-3lm6QPV7-DMdJ_8rkEAwvJuTe0jJ1gAxrdiTbQQoujURvS-yV14/s1600-h/image%25255B41%25255D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQWS6KGfFxPPlttut__A5rRKoL41s3L-ZM4Bv1f0oDfjibQOkCjxNUgmi7kzRBicJgfEIVwLQz4aSEEMI9BJCO-vj3LFAv-lP9gzwDvvuKvQtB41HATXzaEdP9MlGG9XpLWNbquzQ4ixM/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="244" /></a><br />
<br />
3) Now that you have your filters added to the view you can apply Colors and Line Patterns. Below is what I typically use for Colors. Depending on what discipline I use for the view I might halftone everything that’s not being worked on. So in a Duct view I will halftone all the Plumbing Piping so the Duct Filter colors stand out more.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRoa8SQ7Ku9ZdlX4UG9XynaJGu38OuoaoeqTZn6C87kDfp_PBXq6_c1TPPteS9neHsbYvp1rTrgrKntovPsY4w91jQPUVcgWxYXsib5RTprcZPXilJjbGDs2a7j0ioEil9v29cnWtd-BA/s1600-h/image%25255B44%25255D.png"><img alt="image" border="0" height="207" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEierI1pscnfOdXin5gpbbosLnekuD2-cONucBEAQcnZZEsjdRa4qeN_J-s97e84-vpkjMYJt3WeUJ-VjqGHtVpLaHFKj6gYoNtuA9zBs-xW3YuRnvQVgjUVhxs_MfVi8coX6IavxCWAh1M/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="244" /></a><br />
<br />
NOTE: In each Duct and Piping System Type Properties there is an option for graphical overrides. You can also change the color here for the system but keep in mind this is a global change. The filters in visibility graphics will override this setting. The graphical overrides in the Duct and Piping System Type Properties will transfer through if your model is linked into another file and there is no way to override this which is why I choose not to use it.Phil Pleisshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16530492295152730083noreply@blogger.com79tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2974580290482182382.post-49489037053253102052012-05-18T14:53:00.000-07:002012-05-18T14:53:09.025-07:00Managing MEP Content Libraries on Large Projects & Creating a ‘Test Model’I once heard a term for Revit called “dog piling”. This is where people put a bunch of families outside the building as kind of a library to copy from since revit doesn’t really have tool pallets of any sort. Why would a dog need to pile bones if he could right click and create another one instantly?! <br />
In this writeup I am going to discuss some of the lessons I have learned over the past few years about managing MEP content on a large project. Some of this content I created from scratch and some I downloaded from manufacturers. On this project I was in charge of managing the HVAC and Plumbing content. <br />
<br />
<b>Sourcing Content</b> <br />
<b></b><br />
<i>Creating content from scratch:</i> <br />
Custom content will need to be created since there are still manufacturers that are not providing content. This will probably always be an issue with BIM especially if the project requires custom equipment. Autodesk has a good tutorial on this but it’s pretty outdated. It would still be valuable to go through it and get the basics so you can build on it. There are also other sources: blogs, youtube, etc. <br />
<i></i> <br />
<i>Link to Autodesk Revit MEP Family Tutorials:</i> <br />
(<a href="http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=13092938&linkID=9243140">http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=13092938&linkID=9243140</a>) <br />
<i></i> <br />
<i>Downloading content from manufacturer’s:</i> <br />
There are many manufacturers providing Revit families these days. I have a list in a previous blog post with links to all the website of manufacturer’s providing content. (The link to AUGI is probably more up to date)Some manufacturers have better content than others but it is often easier to start with these than it is to start from scratch. <br />
<i></i> <br />
<i>Below are a few things to watch out for with families in no apparent order:</i> <br />
*<i>AIA-E202:</i> Some projects are required to be modeled to a certain level of detail based on this document. <br />
*<i>Level of detail:</i> Families with too much detail can drastically slow down a large model. Especially if you have a hundreds or thousands of instances. On small projects this is not as big of a deal. Find a balance between modeling all the details of a part or just modeling the general shape. Also, round shapes take more PC power to calculate than square shapes! <br />
*<i>Display in Medium vs Fine Detail:</i> Sheet views are typically set to Medium Detail. If the manufacture has not taken this into consideration then it might not show the proper symbol on plan (Valves, Diffusers, Lights, etc.) <br />
*<i>Connector properties:</i> Test the duct and pipe flow to make sure these are calculating in the right direction. Also that they are on the right system. (see image) <br />
*<i>Flow Arrows:</i> I put flow arrows on equipment that only show up in fine detail so the designers don’t put them backwards. This way the will not plot on the sheets that are set to Medium Detail. (see image) <br />
*<i>Maintenance Clearance:</i> I used the same Mechanical Equipment Sub-Category name for all my maintenance clearances. This way we only had to uncheck one place to turn them all off in Visibility Graphics. <br />
*<i>Hosted vs Non-Hosted:</i> The big hosted vs non-hosted debate saga continues…. My personal preference is non-hosted and if we have to use hosted use a reference plane over a linked surface. There are many sources on the internet where this issue is debated heavily so go there since I’m not looking to get involved :)<br />
*<i>Navisworks:</i> If you are using navisworks keep in mind that each extrusion becomes an element that is clashed. For example, if you have a pendant light family that has 4 horizontal extrusions for the light shape you will get 4 clashes if its intersecting a duct. There might be a way to filter these out in NW. <br />
*<i>Materials:</i> Are you going to be rendering this model? If so you might need more detail in your families and materials applied so the renderings turn out better. <br />
*<i>Model Category:</i> Depending on how you are controlling visibility and how you want the family to work the Model Category could be pretty important. <br />
*<i>Type vs Instance Parameters:</i> Be sure to think through where you use type and instance parameters. Some of the manufacturers might not do this how you will need it in your project since it can vary. <br />
i. <i>Type Catalogs:</i> More family types will make your working model larger. Only bring in what types you need! <br />

<b></b> <br />
<b></b> <br />
<b>Test Model</b> <br />
I decided it would be a better idea to create a blank project and set up a view where you can layout the different families and family types. The purpose is to test families before they are distributed to the team and inserted into the project models. You can put all the families for the project into one test model or split them up by discipline depending on project size and the amount of content. <br />
It is probably a good idea to use the same template used for the project models rather than the out of the box template. <br />

<i></i> <br />
<i>Things to test:</i> <br />
*Display at different detail levels on plan, in section and 3D <br />
-Medium Detail is typical for sheet views <br />
-Fine Detail is typical for working views <br />
*Parametric families should flex properly <br />
*System connector properties calculate flow and be on the right system type <br />
*Hosted/Non-Hosted families host properly <br />
*Tags display properly – I input some of the type parameter data the tags are reading before I distributed them. For example diffusers and the GRD schedule. <br />
*Setup a small room with a ceiling to test hosted families if you are going this route. Otherwise reference planes will work. (ex. diffusers, receptacles, etc) <br />
<i></i> <br />
<i>Create Library documents for designers:</i> <br />
*Create PDF’s of the different families and family types for the engineers to reference. This is helpful on a large project with hundreds of different families. Sorting through them in the properties pull-down can be a daunting task. If they have a PDF to reference they can go to the project browser and find the type name to insert. (see image) <br />
*Be sure to communicate to the designers that they should not change Type Properties without notifying you! <br />

Below is an example of how I took a CAD detail library and converted it to Revit. You might need to do a few things different depending on how your CAD detail library is set up but this should point you in the right direction. <br />
<b></b> <br />
<b>Line Types & Text Style:</b> <br />
<b></b><br />
I started with a blank Revit project. First I created the Line Styles in the image below in Revit. I matched the colors with the layers in the AutoCAD files I will be taking the details from. Also note that I created a separate Line Style for dashed lines. <br />
<br />
<i>Line Styles</i> <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvs6IbiW1YdGfeYaZAV-b-aUAm60FFXGGLH7Hmkpv6Lk4HV0Jm_Fb9PK9t6P_O5s0FVTzS5GmU6SAzO_ZppTL9OBZ-ePzHrOdifnMU-9MQjcrfrCw9V-Bk1YdVcG8E-UVL0Ls3yQVnV8A/s1600-h/clip_image002%25255B7%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image002[7]" border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNrfzy_zA0Qt_kOsyYQXbcY9mmrt56orcX7f22_FbnVbbY-vSHsxpYtXQToH6tba8EStp4qKTegW6fpFbTXOXUeIYZch2XmeWqElM8UNp5kZLnTBLdxGiHqvcxU4YcPTV8AkiZ8c7gvsg/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image002[7]" width="401" /></a> <br />
<br />
<br />
I created a text style in Revit for the detail text. This way it will not interfere with any text styles in my template and all the text in details can be isolated if needed. <br />
<br />
<i>Text Style</i> <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwYLIfNY31uy7YvbjkIB9u3J4hDwNQAdNwsRTcRtsg0pYeFAdwSpUKRNAxFsmaUkp4jSWCWma6hoEWI24g1vDS-uc2LvPEzZQWwXx867FU2P2yDuYM05OBF_6Kov3L8rXbJmKebdsSLfU/s1600-h/clip_image004%25255B7%25255D%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image004[7]" border="0" height="339" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-cGx-Cf4iGtQ/TygEHIGZJMI/AAAAAAAAAUs/l8SLZHEBvP4/clip_image004%25255B7%25255D_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image004[7]" width="257" /></a> <br />
<br />
<br />
<b></b><br />
<b>Converting Files from AutoCAD:</b> <br />
1) Create a Drafting View and set the scale to 12” = 1’=0” <br />
2) Import CAD - Select CAD File <br />
a. Everything in CAD has to be in the same place (Paper Space or Model Space) <br />
3) Import CAD Format Settings <br />
a. Colors: Black & White <br />
b. Layers: Visible <br />
c. Import Units: Auto-Detect <br />
d. Positioning: Auto – Center to Center <br />
4) Select the CAD element and Explode - Full Explode <br />
a. Repeat this until it will not explode any further <br />
5) Condense the Lines and Text to the Line Styles created. <br />
a. Easiest way to condense lines is to draw a window around all the objects and filter out each Line Style individually. <br />
b. Easiest way to condense text is to right click on it and select all instances in view. <br />
6) Separate each individual detail into its own view. Easiest way to do this is to duplicate with detailing and delete the details except the one that needs to be isolated. <br />
7) Name each view with the title needed when it’s inserted on a sheet. <br />
<b>NOTE: Leaders and Hatch Patterns will not convert to Revit. Lines shorter than 1/32” will not convert to Revit.</b> <br />
<strong></strong> <br />
<strong></strong> <br />
<b>View Organization:</b> <br />
<b></b><br />
In order to get the details to organize in the project browser when inserted you will need to match the ‘Views’ properties in your company’s template. <br />
Create two project parameters called ‘View Type’ and ‘View Usage’. Match the parameter data below for both. Also note that Views is checked under Categories. <br />
<br />
<i>Project Parameter Properties</i> <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG7AaEt0WQF0PGwsJfsLYtDQPRAg4WOUJJo1_f36DlQJfuI1QcefynrDIgNmQb0HSP3sV_sbwinNwpQmJmPi-2rAFV-_OH0FlX6Go09ajbz643tVm3SiTNTXfzWvfRk3HWpzO35-fHeeg/s1600-h/clip_image005%25255B4%25255D.png"><img alt="clip_image005" border="0" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXncVyyXEGag7z43QbebdcPsVM7lmhljVI59HGMBhFB6yEw-Xz68y_s0am946hFwYvU_rO0THr_fq914WuR1oKJ0qeS3x3rs2sha7AWuqnKhpNryxUl_vJGWTojQ4WLxOzD3uqGQ2xcQc/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image005" width="425" /></a><br />
<br />
<b></b><br />
You can get to the Browser Organization Properties by right clicking on ‘Views’ in the project browser. Then click on Edit Folders. I did not apply any filters. <br />
<br />
<i>View Organization</i> <br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-CUBaG3iC-bw/TygEJFYF_XI/AAAAAAAAAVE/s_qTZKuM0Yg/s1600-h/clip_image007%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image007" border="0" height="460" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-u0C2kGJG3kg/TygEJXr9UnI/AAAAAAAAAVM/ydHZpeYASj4/clip_image007_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image007" width="331" /></a> <br />
<br />
Based on how I setup the Browser Organization Properties above the following needs to be entered into each views instance properties: <br />
<i>View Type:</i> Sheet Views (I separate Sheet Views and Working Views. Details are Sheet Views) <br />
<i>Sub-Discipline:</i> The discipline that the detail pertains to (ex. Fire Protection, Plumbing, etc.) <br />
<i>View Usage:</i> Type of detail within the discipline (ex. Hangers, Equipment, etc.) <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8upRNUALnrTs1Sl5dl1Q2jRFjJPfK0VTU4rWOpyWCAIDkZQsXYju9EnWUF0R1bI5SpHyUIkdVYmQqwfXVJYnbe65aT4xe8vHN3fxMjCYlLyjFosb2MH-P2DW0Vm4v5OesqZK82b4FHa0/s1600-h/clip_image009%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image009" border="0" height="351" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-oZIgV0y-Sa8/TygEKEtNMEI/AAAAAAAAAVc/brVdpzfTtRw/clip_image009_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image009" width="282" /></a> <br />
<br />
Below is an image of the Project Browser after this is set up. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_vrJ_TZVgTmIsbZGg8kk8ZJmhS8hQeN1iP1Bl3Ejjxv8SuFaRuIB_u3G5ftxeNG5tASANHSOT1SXKcYQtyYBVdzal-bGxOc3nh4rxXo6MkiQelBD7poDeamP2wO1F3e8fCkP6b-sSmUQ/s1600-h/clip_image011%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image011" border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjm0UmYEA016f77-Yj9cIjuD41sfv7QWitdWfmPPC1X_BkImviNYhupQ5YE1WFVcvg2WNXFhTJy-QjUw2q-_t_y6TYTr3sEEAQzA0PnbdABepj4loJ7jghkUFDrpC2fuecfK3HiZf7D2s/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image011" width="244" /></a> <br />
<br />
I set up a sheet for each ‘View Usage’ category and created a collated PDF with all the details. This gives non-Revit users the ability to view the details library. Also, it’s quicker to view them without opening Revit if needed. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrYmjNk7ykqmwdxpdsDlysuUmuoDwhYZ4a-V1omLxiIPbcJtt0GevVObOQioG7EAWBFFIp22sNtvuJCoYDzTU-Y6sfrtgS7Qnuo2NYPF58EGvFrnYtdx1lV3YJM8rfScw90tUg42L_pnQ/s1600-h/clip_image013%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image013" border="0" height="183" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaYHhWow8meVI0vceBJERuNlK0lecWu9R_PZgYIxILDzjxA45LVNaDTuKOTYF_Dia9Gh967uJffimcL7M9f15BFK3VNk3SA6cg0C4qCPwSgreFV0_AXvic_cxW6V8KGJRPIHqr6moVbUs/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image013" width="244" /></a><br />
<br />
<b>Insert From File:</b><br />
<b></b><br />
Now the details file is set up and you are ready to start inserting details into your project. Go to Insert from File under the Insert tab in the Ribbon and select Insert Views from File. Go to the location of the details file you set up. <br />
<br />
<i>Insert Views from File</i> <br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-ZVt5adhVLA8/TygEL1ihxWI/AAAAAAAAAWE/kOg71QOR9yw/s1600-h/clip_image015%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image015" border="0" height="309" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-6xA8VO4MBoU/TygEMTeiscI/AAAAAAAAAWM/DsWLlbbVtEM/clip_image015_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image015" width="427" /></a> <br />
<br />
The Insert Views window appears. You can then select the details you want to insert into your project. You can select multiple drafting views and sheets and insert them into your project. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-y0Qf1oJCaIA/TygEM9idsiI/AAAAAAAAAWU/NsS7AwjoZlk/s1600-h/clip_image017%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="clip_image017" border="0" height="339" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-bZ1dC0J8tlQ/TygENKd9k4I/AAAAAAAAAWc/Goji_EvS6yA/clip_image017_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="clip_image017" width="416" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
*UPDATE 2-20-2013*<br />
I recently added a numbering scheme to the details so they are easier to sort through when a user goes to insert from file. I added the sheet number/detail number to the begining of the detail name in the View Name property. Then I copied the detail name to Title on Sheet so this will not display on the view title when inserted.<br />
<br />
Example:<br />
<br />

I always pin them but that has not proven to be totally effective. One way to solve this issue is to put each link on a workset (I typically create a workset for each link) (remember the workset is set in the instance properties and type properties for each link). Once the links are on a workset you can make them editable and dont relinquish when you close the model. This has probably been done before but I just started doing it and wanted to pass it on.Phil Pleisshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16530492295152730083noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2974580290482182382.post-20282878403274119492011-06-10T13:14:00.000-07:002011-06-10T13:14:49.264-07:00Adding Columns to Windows ExplorerI know this is a Revit MEP Blog but someone asked the question today "how do I add colums to my Windows Explorer so I can see who edited a file last?". I figured others could probably use this (I certainly will...). <br />
<br />
1) Go to Windows Explorer<br />
2) Right click on the column headers and select "more"<br />
3) Check "Owners"<br />
4) Go to Folder and Search Options and select the "view" tab<br />
5) Select "Apply to Folders"<br />
<br />
You will now see the user name for whoever edited the file/folder last! There are probably other usefull column headers but I didn't explore it any further.Phil Pleisshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16530492295152730083noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2974580290482182382.post-7257557596641385532011-03-15T07:15:00.001-07:002011-03-15T07:15:08.202-07:00Pipe Volume Schedule<p>I will go over how I set up a pipe volume schedule in Revit MEP. <p><b>Pipe Types:</b> <p>For this example I have the pipe types set up with one pipe type for each system. For example CW-Cold Water, HW-Hot Water, HWC-Hot Water Circ, SS-Sanitary Sewer, V-Vent and G-Natural Gas. Each one of these has a Type Mark that I use for tagging. I also have each pipe type on a separate Workset that is being Filtered. So for each pipe system I have a Pipe Type, Filter and Workset. There are many different ways to filter (system, type mark, etc.). You may need to chance a few things about how you set up your schedule based on how you filter the different system types. <p><b>Before Using Schedule:</b> <p>Often times its pretty easy to model pipe using the wrong pipe type without noticing. Because of this it is advised to go to a 3D view and isolate each workset filter and check to make sure the correct Pipe Types are being used. Once a filter is isolated select all the pipe, fittings, etc on the isolated filtered workset. Then select filter on the ribbon or in the bottom right corner of the screen (yes this is a different filter than the visibility graphics filter). You only want to select the pipes to make sure they are on the correct pipe type since the schedule is going to be based on the pipe type. Repeat this step for each pipe type! <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_tsd--mHq66U/TX90WUWI-eI/AAAAAAAAAPU/a4JZUw2NpDQ/s1600-h/clip_image002%5B5%5D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="clip_image002" border="0" alt="clip_image002" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUrRdRz_91j-HpgHQzxKI3TalcECNQW4zVXzMTmofXIOC5GM6e7e924K87a8jq7hJH9yDLyMLjNKf8fs-Iewi_O507mbUrbnyWHrOMwOX0D85D-5E0Xpau3-Wh3vVPn0RLYymIP9lONes/?imgmax=800" width="416" height="379"></a> <p> <p> <p><b></b> <p><b></b> <p><b>Creating the Schedule:</b> <p>1) On the Ribbon go to View-Schedules-Schedule/Quantities and create a “Pipe” schedule. These have been helpful when coordinating the spaces as the rooms move around. I also created a space schedule which lists some space properties such as level, space number, space name, area and limit offset. See images below. <p>Go to Visibility Graphics and check all boxes. I also turn off all MEP model elements such as duct, pipes, lights, etc. <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxAdY2dGT5_96qX2FI2awpLmGxPiz31vtBsI4KKL28iFzyxwVaDdiG_yT___1AE87qs9gnO0FKEPMZPB_55VFiKK0gch2V9Watn35L8OjGacxbIBmPTomBYgdlOteVWjcIuvnIbjtDwig/s1600-h/clip_image001%5B3%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="clip_image001" border="0" alt="clip_image001" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBgw2C09ucODnSXtnh37KaFHdz-kPhvyBQVeV9V_Tbn_yfj5K5NWiAe0wYhjG6hmZF59uZ568yTh25VGue3bGFXOxV2wKIQX8o4dPXkb4kOC-g2INHPebWVrbzM01vewXq4vHKcVlfoz4/?imgmax=800" width="209" height="73"></a> <p> <p>The space boundaries are then filled so they are easier to see. <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuCG-Bnc2YIP2sMF9Ps-VWONy0qsfsa_eZt1UAOUiB4qswE0bAdgmclRvSCY1OT1cOlmLYfKE6X0MHd8ln-9SpZlSlUvMfdjJ9YbEh50zWsYipziLnZqXBPb6CliHZoPuRv-MuHWGJC-o/s1600-h/clip_image003%5B7%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="clip_image003" border="0" alt="clip_image003" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFqvEmmablKZs24s2UXir2KdRPch7u-MPGcbm4e6cluJIYqzu1SjWKC7XK3wut97XsYga7sKHUeRvxd4qgCd0QU9Yj5B649sHHdwCCzqpOVn0Usz5MT8FvVwZxGo2Z1TnPW7FrKblEVFc/?imgmax=800" width="555" height="432"></a> <p> <p> <p>When the architects move rooms around in their model sometimes the space doesn’t automatically move with it. The mechanical room is still being designed but its getting more nailed down. I added the glycol feeders and the tempering valve you can see in the back behind the water heater. I changed the pipe materials to copper. Eventually I will save the different pipe types into seperate models so I can add seperate materials to them (cannot currently do this in revit)...<br />
